The WARMTH COMFORT RATING parameter helps to briefly summarize the factors that influence the thermal comfort of a jacket both in the case of natural padding in real feather and in the case of padding with synthetic fibers.
Among these factors, the most important is certainly the amount of air gaps in the padding that exploit the insulating capacity of the air. This parameter, which in the case of feather is called Fill Power, provides indications of volume and lightness of the padding. The higher it is, the more the jacket will insulate from the external temperature and simultaneously maintain body temperature.
This measure on its own, however, is not able to provide a complete indication of thermal comfort for a down padded jacket; other factors to be taken into consideration are the external temperature, the wind and the breathability of the fabric of the jacket, as well as, clearly, our level of physical activity: when in motion, our metabolic rate increases considerably and the insulating property of padding helps to maintain our body temperature.
